Donkey Kong 1981, first Mario game (i.e. game with Mario)

Mario is a spin-off of Donkey Kong.

The CURRENT Donkey Kong is also a spin-off of the original Donkey Kong, if you wish.

To be technical, the current DK is the son of Donkey Kong Jr, and the grandson of the original Donkey Kong, who as you all know is Cranky.

Donkey Kong (original) > Donkey Kong Jr > Donkey Kong (modern)

I chose yes. Donkey kong was introduced back in '81 alongside Mario. So yes I consider him a mario character.

But on a broader level, they each exist in the others' universe. If you drew a ven diagram with one circle for Mario characters and another for Donkey Kong characters, both Mario and Donkey Kong would be in the overlap.

I'll agree with you here. It's a very interesting topic, actually. But in technical terms, Mario is actually a Donkey Kong character. Mario was just... More successful.

I would say that DK plays a huge role in Mario and its success, and since there in so many games together, I consider them both part of the 'Mario' franchise

I'd say so. Since Rare is owned by Microsoft Donkey Kong was still able to stay with Nintendo. That alone should be proof enough.

Thinking only about Donkey Kong, I do usually think of him as a Mario series character, but I also usually think of, say, the Donkey Kong Country series as separate from Mario.

I agree with what Audacity said about the Venn diagram--I think that's a good way of saying it.

well you can't really say mario is a donkey kong character or donkey kong is a mario character considering that mario was jumpman at the time, and though we know he is the same person, the name change makes me decide that i am on the side of neither of them being a character of anothers game. But even there i am wrong because march of the mini's had donkey kong and mario so i guess they are a character of each others game

So Donkey Kong is owned by Nintendo makes him a Mario character.... so I guess Link is a Mario character.
And Waluigi is not a Mario character, because he's owned by Camelot?

All I know about Donkey Kong is that I want a 3DS DKC game.

Also, with the whole "Mario's a Donkey Kong character", I don't really think that works out, but that's just personal opinion... I know the game's called "Donkey Kong", but that doesn't make it more Donkey Kong's game than it is Mario's, they both had equal parts (just Mario lacked a name, but meh).

Either way, where the hell is K. Rool?

Yep, Mario is technically a Donkey Kong character, but mario became more popular and snatched the limelight early in both of their existence.
