sometimes series do gain more polarity due to getting an anime.
Case in point: Jojo
Before the anime came out, you were labeled as a pretentious hipster, then Stardust Crusaders got an anime adaptation, and everyone and their grandmothers are quoting Jojo.

May be if it isn't for the animation, it might not have gotten that sort of popularity
