Back in the past there were not many good alternative search engines since I felt Yahoo and Bing were not very good. I still dislike Bing, and Yahoo, but their results are getting better.
But, these days, there is http://blekko.com/ , http://duckduckgo.com/ , https://www.startpage.com/ , and many others which results are as good, or even better then other search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, so Yes, I think it is easier to switch main search engines then in the past where most alternatives where not as good as Google or Bing.
