I think it is not as worth it to upgrade the RAM on a netbook and cheap laptop because the processor, and video chip are usually the main reason that the netbook or cheap laptop is slow. Many of these cheap laptops can only handle having 2 or less programs open at the same time because of a slow processor, so running out of RAM is not a big concern for many users.

Plus, netbooks and cheap laptops are sometimes difficult to open, and upgrade, so you risk breaking your laptop if you do not know what you are doing.

What about taking it to a repair shop and have them upgrade the RAM for you?

It could be a good idea to hire a repair shop. But, sometimes the cost of upgrading RAM maybe expensive if the technician charges a lot of money for upgrading RAM.

It can help but not the best means of getting faster performance.

Older RAM like DDR1 and SDRAM can also be expensive compared to DDR3-DDR4 RAM because most of the RAM got sold, and is discontinued because of low demand from buyers. Used RAM is sometimes expensive if not many used packages of SDRAM and DDR1 RAM exist for sale.

Sometimes the government, and businesses may buy up a lot of the older RAM to keep their older systems running, so there is less RAM for regular buyers.

Sometimes to speed up a PC just requires killing the right program. I killed a few tonight that seem to fix my recent lag issues.

Using a lightweight Linux operating system like installing Puppy Linux or Tiny Core Linux can also make a computer a lot faster because Linux uses less RAM, and CPU resources.

I think most laptop let you run Linux off a USB flash drive, SD card, or drive when you set the laptop to boot from an external drive.

But, Linux is not for everyone because a lot of programs like MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint don't work, and there are not as many games available for Linux. Linux can also be difficult to use for beginners.
