Crazy I know, but I've seen a few people online talk about how the track reminds them of the American Super Mario Bros movie, the weird one with Peach and co being evolved dinosaurs from a parallel dimension and something about a meteorite, and King Koopa looking human. This one:
Why? Well look at one of the most recent tracks, Neo Bowser City:
Okay, it's cartoony, but isn't it similar in concept to Dinohattan from the movie?
They're both miserable city areas in the midst of likely baron landscapes, with large Bowser signs everyone (Koopa in the movie was the equivalent to Bowser, for anyone who didn't figure out the obvious), and heck, you could even say the relationship between Bowser City and Mushroom City is similar to the one between Dinohattan and New York, the former being almost a twisted copy of the latter.
Also, not related to the topic, but Bowser's city has a Clown Car/Copter hovering about near the start/finish line. Nice reference.
