The review scores are lower than normal, the sales in Japan are supposedly a bit lower than normal and people's excitement for it is often about non existant.

Is the game a bit of a failure? Is it a disappointing Mario game?

If you expect it to be revolutionary, then yes. But if you take it for what it is, the 3DS's side scrolling Mario game, you'll see it's actually pretty damn fun. Looks to be better than 3D land so far.

It's probably how multiple Mario games are released a year, the quality for each game is decreasing. People have every right not to expect this one to be a masterpiece.

Looks to be better than 3D land so far.

I don't see how.
I had 0% anticipation for this game.
I have 0% intentions to buy this game.
I will have 0% intentions to ask this game for a future holiday/birthday.

Meanwhile, I didn't anticipate 3D Land.
I ended up buying it.
I ended up loving it.

2D Mario games are old and tiring already, when Sony makes a remake, everyone goes chaotic.
When Nintendo makes another Mario remake, everyone praises them.
The only time I agree with this is Zelda, because Zelda is awesome.

Most people just complain about the game because it's "a New Super Mario Bros" game, and looks "too much like the other ones", and "REHASH", "lame million coin prize"...

But then, most of those just complain because they like complaining.... and most of them aren't members here.

wsoxfan1214 sucks

I preordered and I'm picking it up on Sunday. I was speaking with employees, and all of them were excited. I spoke with friends, they were excited too. I don't expect this game to make as much as it's previous games because there are two other games out and a fourth coming. They can't drastically change the gameplay because it won't be nsmb2, it will be Some Mario X

i dont have it yet but im gonna download it from eshop but i watched the videos on eshop and i have 2 say its just looks like a mystery if its good or bad ^-^

If you like the NSMB gameplay (which personally I think doesn't quite stack up to the ultimately superior Rayman Origins), then it's for you. But to me, I think it's gotten old. But this game will NOT be a failure. People will eat this up.

Pickin' it up today in just a few hours. So long as it wasn't delayed. And if it was, I swear I'll get cranky.

This'll be good. I'm more hyped up then I was for 3D Land. And I wasn't that hyped up for it - more excitement with Galaxy 2 then that. This is almost level with New Super Mario Bros. Wii - not as high as Galaxy 2, but high enough. Put simply, I didn't enjoy 3D Land to well. Maybe it was the whole time limit thing in a 3D Mario adventure that I didn't like. But I sure am looking forward to this. And I say to heck with the million Coins, I just wanna play all the levels.

I am excited for this game. My friends are excited for this game. The GameStop employees are excited for it too (at least the people I talked to were excited).
I think that regardless of the reviews it gets, NSMB2 will go on to be a million selling game. Just like Mario games previous to it. People will groan and gripe and complain it's nothing new but in the end it's a Nintendo game and it will sell well.
