Saving money can be one of the main reasons people sometimes use cheap portable electronics like cell phones and laptops.

But, sometimes people may live or work in a neighborhood where there is a lot of crime where there is a greater chance that a robber will steal an expensive smartphone like the iPhone 7, and more expensive laptops like the Apple Macbook Pro compared to an ZTE cell phone, and Acer netbook which cost less money to buy

There are people who find new technology to hard to use, so they rather use an older style non-smartphone cell phone like a flip phone. There are also some users who prefer older laptops with Windows XP, and 7 because some of their software and hardware like printers, scanners, and PC game controllers no longer works for Windows 8.1 and 10.

Some people don't like spending money on Microsoft and Apple PCs because of MS and Apple's software broke their PC after a software update, or cause their PC to slowdown because of a bad update. These users may switch to Linux, or using their Android tablet to do most of their daily tasks rather than buying another PC with a Windows or Apple OS.

Almost have to, since most tech runs on some kind of subscription that keeps pulling money out of a person.

It is disappointing that subscriptions like the internet, cable tv, cell phone service and data, landline phone, online gaming like Xbox live gold and PSN+, software subscriptions, online cloud software and backup subscription, and electricity can be very expensive in North America, and makes it harder for people to save money for stuff like food, and housing.
