Is Skyward Sword less popular than intended because it's combat is actually realistic?

You've seen how Skyward Sword introduces accurate swordplay with Wii MotionPlus as well as how it seems the game isn't selling too fantastic compared to some other Zelda games and fantasy games in general. But perhaps the reason is that the combat is arguably 'too' realistic, and that people don't want perfectly accurate combat.

Maybe people just want to feel like badasses and would prefer the combat be kind of mindless to enable that. Same reason that as Cracked said, it seems so many teenage kids and people online would want a zombie apocalypse, because they think they'd be some exception to the rule mowing down the mindless masses as almost part of a power fantasy.

Maybe the reason so many popular games have quite shallow combat is because for many people it just feels good to feel practically invincible and mow down enemies without a second thought rather than having to bypass defences or anything. Real life sword fighting I hear works like Skyward Sword, but people in general likely don't want realistic fighting. They want something which feels like its out of a movie like Lord of the Rings where the combatants aren't thinking or defending but are just attacking near constantly because it looks cool.

On another note, maybe it also didn't catch as much because people don't want to have Link's actions in games mirror theirs in real life since it shows them how kind of pathetic they are. And for many, they play video games as pure escapism, and want it to feel like they're some kind of combat expert regardless of skill.

Am I on to something here?

Umm... No. People play other games like Wii Sports and that represents real sports pretty accurately. So, I just think the recession at the moment...

No. I didn't mind the life like fighting. I didn't like how the controls were unresponsive at times. Like I would be fighting and when I swing my remote, Link didn't swing and it killed me at times.

That's because the gyro is constantly trying to re-align itself. The best thing to do there is to reset the gyro if the controls feel unresponsive. Or re-center if you want a short term solution.

....No, it's less popular because the fanbase made it sound better than it actually is.

really you think wii sports accurately represents "REAL" sports. the reason people play wii sports is so they can play a game that takes remedial skill with some semi realistic controller response.
Wii fit maybe you had a chance but by saying Wii sports was accurate is just naive.

I have not played this zelda mainly because I am in the middle of planning a wedding and most of my paycheck goes right to the soon to be wife. but you can bet your ass I'm going to beat this one just like all the zeldas before it and I mean ALL of them.

You bring up a decent point there, the recession means people are likely spending less money on games in general at the moment (due to more important priorities) and may just not have bought the game yet. The fact it came out in a month with god knows how many other major games couldn't have helped either...

Exactly. Those games are nothing alike; for one thing, Wii Sports doesn't even USE motion plus. And yeah, people who don't like Skyward Sword generally cite things like the motion controls, which really bugs me. The game really did a lot for motion control swordsmanship that made the game fun. I like games that make you jump up as you play, and Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword made me stand up most the entire time as I hacked through hordes. Having watched several people play, I can say that most of the ones who had difficulties with the controls were doing really stupid things with the way they used the sword.

Still, if I were to try to think of reasons it did not sell as well, I would say it had a lot to do with the repetitive nature of the game regions/bosses or maybe even the fact that with the Wii U announced and with backwards compatibility, maybe people want to save up for that. Hell, they might even re-release it like they did Twilight Princess, which, imo was much better except for the Hylian text being reversed for those who actually like to translate things like that.
