Is the Wii U weaker than thought?

Hopefully this isn't true, otherwise it's bad for Nintendo's third party support:

Yikes. If this is true, it kind of puts Nintendo in a really, really bad position about now. Here's why:

For one thing, Nintendo is trying to appeal to third parties, And with them not interested currently due to the Wii being less powerful technically than the competition, a still weaker Wii U would be disastrous for third party support.

Secondly, they seem to have forgotten much of the expanded audience that made the first Wii a success. But those are who got the console to sell so well, support for Nintendo has always been flaky among the self proclaimed 'hardcore'/arrogant teens.

If this report is accurate, and I can thankfully be hopeful it isn't, then this could easily end up being another Gamecube like scenario for Nintendo.

Did the N64 tech demo look anything better than OoT? No. Did Space world 2000 look anything better than TP? No. The actual Zelda game on Wii U should be at least the same as the demo.

You know it's one thing to have a console weaker than your own competition (i.e. Wii vs PS3 and Xbox360)

But seriously.... who in their right minds would make a console that's weaker.... than the PREVIOUS one?

That'd be like having a GameCube that's weaker than the PSOne. Or an N64 that's weaker than the Genesis.

Also, I should note that, IIRC, the GameCube was THE MOST powerful (graphically) of the consoles of the 6th generation (beating the PS2, Xbox AND Dreamcast) -- it's just that the babyish design wasn't appealing, that and developers are like "it's Nintendo, let's just assume it can't handle it", so they didn't bother to use the full power.... also, the GameCube had 3D technology, which was never used, don't forget.

I was thinking about this. The article claims that a vita/ps3 combination should be able to do everything a WiiU can, and do it better. At the moment a PS3 costs about the same as a Vita. Both can be had for approx $250US each, or $500 combined. I think that's in the upper limits or above what people expect/are prepared to pay for a WiiU.

I don't think anyone expects the WiiU controller to be as capable, or expensive to produce as a Vita, but I'd guess it'll add somewhere between $50 -$100 to the cost of the unit. On top of that it'll detract from the processing power of the unit. So with those constraints in mind, I can see how Nintendo might have a challenge to deliver something noticeably better than current gen.

At any rate, it's all just rumour and speculation at this point. Come e3, we'll see the difference.
