Read from CNN:

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been rushed to hospital following a possible shooting during a speech in Nara, Japan, public broadcaster NHK reports.
The broadcaster reported Abe collapsed while giving a campaign speech on a street in Nara City at around 11:30 a.m. local time and appeared to be bleeding after a possible gunshot from the back.
According to a Liberal Democratic Party official, Abe was shot in the chest before being rushed to hospital in an ambulance, NHK reported. The former prime minister was then moved to Nara Medical University.

A suspect has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and a gun was retrieved, the broadcaster reported.
CNN has not yet been able to independently verify these reports.

An aerial photo showed emergency vehicles at the scene in Nara, and a small crowd gathered on the sidewalk. Video broadcast on NHK showed police wrestling a man to the ground on the street near to where Abe was delivering his campaign speech.

Abe was making the speech in support of LDP candidates ahead of the upcoming Upper House elections scheduled for Sunday. He was due to head to Kyoto and Saitama prefecture, near the capital Tokyo.
An official from the Nara City Fire Department confirmed to CNN that a man collapsed while giving a speech on Friday and that man has been transported by ambulance to hospital. The official said he could not confirm the identity of the man or his current medical status.

Read an update he did not make it. He died.

Japan's former prime minister Shinzo Abe has died in hospital after he was shot at a political campaign event, say local media.

Mr Abe was shot at twice while he was giving a speech in the southern city of Nara on Friday morning.
He immediately collapsed and was rushed to the nearest hospital. Pictures taken at the scene showed him bleeding.
Security officials at the scene tackled the gunman, and the 41-year-old suspect is now in police custody.
In an emotional press conference earlier, prime minister Fumio Kishida condemned the attack, saying: "It is barbaric and malicious and it cannot be tolerated."

Hidetada Fukushima, professor of emergency medicine at Nara Medical University Hospital, said that Shinzo Abe sustained two wounds on front of his neck, about 5cm apart. One of the bullets penetrated the heart. He said they conducted blood transfusions but were ultimately unable to stop the bleeding.

Not sure how popular he was in Japan but you really did see him absolutely everywhere when global leaders got together. Kind of crazy that it happened in Japan especially as they don't have that much gun crime.

RIP

Read from nypost on the killer a former JDF member:

The alleged killer was a Nara resident and had worked at Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Forces for three years, but now appeared to be unemployed, cops said.

The alleged assassin who shot dead Shinzo Abe on Friday believed the former Japanese prime minister was involved in a “specific organization” — and that his grudge wasn’t political, police said.

The suspected killer, Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, was tackled to the ground just moments after he allegedly opened fire on the 67-year-old former leader as he delivered a campaign speech in the western region of Nara.

In an interview with investigators, Yamagami allegedly admitted to plotting to kill Abe because he thought the ex-prime minister was connected to an organization that he bore a grudge against.

Police did not reveal the name of the organization or elaborate on what it believed in, adding it wasn’t clear if the group even existed.

The alleged assassin’s grudge did not appear to be about politics, according to police.

Yamagami was calm as he responded to questions during his interview and investigators are still trying to nail down whether he acted alone, police added.

Some of these posts didn't age well. Crazy how mad people can be and being unemployed just sounds like he didn't get along well with people anyways. I was thinking this was political at first myself, but I doubt he was ever a bad person or leader. RIP

It is unfortunate to hear that Shinzo Abe did not survive.

RIP Shinzo Abe
