Following what's been going on with The Jay Leno Show all day has been enough to give any TV reporter a headache, thanks to the many back and forths that have occurred. First, some were saying the much-discussed talk show had been cancelled, but those now seem incorrect. However, what is now being touted as far more likely is the series moving from 10:00pm to 11:35pm – yep, Jay Leno may be back in his old timeslot soon.
TMZ were the first to report on the Leno move. While we still have heard nothing official, New York Times' Bill Carter reports, "NBC executives held extensive discussions with both Mr. Leno and Mr. O'Brien Thursday about the future of the network's late-night lineup" and says that plans are indeed underway for the change.
Leno's show will go from an hour to a half hour, Carter reports. And what about Conan O'Brien? His show will move from 11:35 to 12:05, while Jimmy Fallon will move to 1:05am.
If all of this happens, it will be the first genuine acknowledgement by NBC that The Jay Leno Show just hasn't been working. While the show is cheap enough to be pulling in a profit, it's been very damaging for NBC's affiliates – the lower ratings of the Leno show have led to lower ratings for the local newscasts at 11:00pm. The plan is for this revised lineup to begin after NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics ends on February 28th.
The big question then is what does NBC fill the 10:00pm timeslot with? They have a lot of pilots in the pipeline, but those series won't be ready until next fall. No doubt some extra installments of Dateline will come in handy, but five nights worth? TheWrap.com suggests NBC could program some series from sister cable station USA in the short term. They also say NBC is still considering other possibilities for where to move Leno, including 8:00pm – but note that Leno is very resistant to that.

so leno will come out, do his monologue, do some little segment and sign off for the night? seems like they should just cancel him.
