I admit it, I'm a Kingdom Hearts fan, I love everything about the series, and I'm 100% biased towards it in every possible way.

But if there's one thing you can't deny, it's that this game is good, perhaps not perfect like I think it is, but it sure is worth the money and time that you will spend on it once you get addicted.

--Cons--

-Can get boring, mashing the same button over and over at times

-The structure of levels and platforming is incredibly annoying, getting stuck in random places at times

-Dream Eaters are a bad version of allies in the original Kingdom Hearts

-Story has more twists than a Pretzel

--Pros--
Many abilites and items, none outshines the others+
Very nice graphics, one of the best on the 3DS+
Easy to jump into the series if you didn't play any other KH games before+
Well written story, tho sometimes cliche'd and odd+

Will he ever zipper his shirt to the end?

If you have played a Kingdom Hearts title before, you will be familiar with this one, it's basically the same game with a different story and better levels and plot.
In the game you will follow Sora and Riku, the two main protagonists in the game, as they travel from world to world trying to awake all of them from their slumber.
Each world splits into two phases, Dive mode and the actual level, with the former being much shorter.
Dive mode includes falling from the sky into differently themed courses, with the point of making it alive to the ground as fast as you can, sometimes with different objectives.
The levels themselves involve exploring Disney-themed worlds to find keyholes at the end of each level, unlocking them and passing on to the next level, while killing hordes of monsters, of course.

All of the worlds in the game are Disney-themed, including Tron: Legacy, The Hunchback from Notre Dame' and The three Musketeers.
The point of the game is to go through all worlds to pass the "Mark of Mastery" test, which will make Sora and Riku true Keyblade masters, while uncovering a very complicated plot along the way.

Run Sora, run~!

The game has some of the best graphics on the 3DS, while the 3D effect itself isn't very impressive, it does wonders in cutscenes, enchancing your gameplay a lot in Dive Mode too.

The game introduces a few new things to the series aswell, such as

  • Flowmotion - Being able to move around much quicker around the maps by jumping from wall to wall, riding grind rails and hanging from poles.
  • Dream Eaters - Replacing allies from previous games in the series, Dream eaters are two pets who you can customize, level, and even take pictures with! Too bad that the actual AI is dumb and will never heal you when you really need it, even if you maxed out their healing skills. You can also play minigames with your Dream Eaters, which is the only way you can teach them new skills. Even tho they're entretaining at times, they're mostly a cheap way to try and prolong the game.
  • Flick Rush - A minigame which is quite fun, it involves chosing 3 of your Dream Eaters, and fighting it out against your opponent, you can even play with your friends, but sadly, you can't do it unless that friend is right near you using WiFi. It's worth mentioning that playing Flick Rush can net you some easy skills and items that you can otherwise not get in the game.

References to other games, gotta love em' all!

The soundtrack in this game is simply amazing, some of the tracks are remixes from the earlier games in the series, but most of them are new, and great too:

Another thing worth mentioning is the length of the game.
If you're a completionist, you like exploring every nook and cranny of every single map and you want to collect all Dream Eaters there are, you can easily squeeze +70 hours of this game, yes, 70 hours.
If you're the average player, you will try to find the bonuses and play a bit of Flick Rush, but in no way is going to collect all Dream Eaters or find all of the chests in the game, then you might get around 50 hours of the game.
If you like breezing through games, finishing them as fast as you can, you just MIGHT be able to do it in around 20 hours.
Personally? It took me 46 hours to finish the game, without trying to find any bonus, and play a very little sample of Flick Rush.

Surfing in the air = Mind blown
If there are two things that didn't go well in the game, it's the platforming and the Drop system.
Countless times, I tried entering an area which seemed very big, spread, and..Accesible, but no, it's just a decoration, and if you walk there, you might get stuck there for some time, trying to walk out of it.
I'm not saying the game is glitchy as hell, I'm saying it has it's technical issues, and it has quite a few of them.

The Drop system, is both a blessing and a curse.
"Dropping" means switching between Riku and Sora, and Sora and Riku.
You can do so at any time you want, but when you get back to your original character, you join the gameplay at the same spot where you dropped. Oh, and did I mention that you have a set time to play a character, before you automatically drop?
This also applies to boss fights, some boss fights can last up to 15 minutes (YEA!) under certain conditions (Being underleveled, caused by skipping everything and then getting to a boss fight on a really low level), and the drop system can screw you up when you're finally getting at that though boss.
It DOES, however, make you play both characters continounsly and watch how their actions affect each other, enhancing the story and gameplay even more.

Now THAT'S a good looking man!

Overall, this is a very solid game, it may not be perfect, but it's extremely long, has an in-depth story, great gameplay, good controls and amazing graphics.

Nicely written review! I like how you just "gave it to us straight" right at the start and listed the pros and cons. It really gives us an idea of where the review is heading and is actually a really good technique (I'll be adding it to the list of review examples, actually, as this just gives members another form of review they can use, and shows that not all reviews need to be the generic "graphics, music, gameplay" trifecta and so on).

It was short and sweet. It might've been a little vague for those new to the series, and you could've possibly added a bit more to the explanation of the story (you're welcome to edit your post of course). That said, if the story really is that simple, then that's all good and doesn't need expanding.

This review will probably help fans of the previous games (moreso than newcomers to the series) in determining whether or not to get it, but all of that aside, you've still made this review accessible to those who have never played a Kingdom Hearts game in their life. Good work!

The problem with the story in this game, is that it's soooo hard to explain it without spoiling everything, it's almost impossible, you have to play the game to the end to realize why, but at least to me, you can't explain the story except -Save the sleeping worlds while you unravel some more stuff that I can't explain-.

I fixed it a little tho, hope it's better :P

If that's the case, well it's good that you pointed that out. I wasn't all to sure about what the story was but now I know that if I were to get this I'd be in for quite a roller coaster.

I also saw that one of the pros was being a good game to get into the series, something that I did glance over as I went onto the main review, rofl. That was a good point to make so good job.

Yea, the game throws away flashbacks/videos and walls of texts at you, after playing the game you magically understand all the previous games.

If you want to understand even the beggining of KH3, you're gonna have to play KH1, CoM, KH2 and KHDDD.

I just completed KHDDD last night...took me 18 hours on Standard, with no flick rush and about 2 hours of level grinding Sora for his final boss (GOD he was annoying...he'd have been the hardest boss in the game if it weren't for the fact I figured out how to dodge almost everything he sent at me at about the 10th try). I disagree with your analysis on a couple spots, though overall I like the review. Mainly the part where you say the game is "not quite glitchy as hell"...I don't know what game you're playing, but I had no issues getting trapped in corners, aside from when dream eaters attacked me there...and you know what I did then? Quick flowmotion attack to blast them away, then get out of the corners. You also were incorrect about the drop system. When you drop, then return to the first character, you return to the exact point you dropped, not the save point. I'd also have mentioned that there are a couple times when you can't find a save point (particularly towards the end with all the boss fights in a row) which is frustrating for a handheld game.

Otherwise, good job!

1. 18 hours on standard? God you're fast.

2. I did get trapped a lot in this game, and many other people in different forums and IRL friends did, too, perhaps you just got lucky.

3.About the save points, my bad, I'll fix that right away <3

I'm glad you got the game btw, and thank you very much :D

Heh, I'm a Kingdom Hearts fan...didn't get Re: Coded because it sounded dumb (and it didn't really further the plot), and I wasn't going to get Dream Drop because of the whole "dreaming" aspect, but when I found out it had a ton of plot elements I changed my mind, and I'm really glad I did. As for my playing it in 18 hours...when I get a new game that's good...I don't stop playing it. I'm also terribly efficient when I'm interested in the plot...granted, several bosses gave me trouble...particularly Sora's last two...but I'm a fast level grinder and it didn't take too long to get strong enough to beat them. For some reason the only boss on Riku's end that gave me any trouble was Riku's first boss in the last world. Beat the 3rd, 4th, and 5th bosses on my first try...2nd I had to learn how to dodge his charging attack, then I beat him no problem. Great game, the first one that's taken me more than one day (~6 hours) to beat since Tales of the Abyss (which remains the longest game I've played to date...50 hours for the first playthrough).

Wow! I really want to get ToA soon..

Personally, Sora's last two and the flying magician in a broom one gave me trouble :/

Riku's bosses seemed surprisngly easy in comparsion.

Umm...Sora's second to last boss is Spellican as he only has one in the last world...unless you mean the meeting with him in the first world's second visit...then I agree that he was annoying there as well...the second thing he summoned was the hardest...that boss was NOT meant to be fought in close quarters. Yeah, the way I looked at it, Riku had the harder stages as far as enemy placement, achieving the objectives, etc...but Sora had the harder bosses. Most of Riku's had a trick to them(In The Grid it took me a while to realize Riku's boss punished you for using the flowmotion area)...Sora's tended to just be "dodge everything they throw at you and just keep hitting them in the seconds they aren't attacking. Riku's only got to that point in the last world, and only his first boss in that world was difficult to do that with, what with the health drain move chasing you if you dodge and being so finicky with the block timing.

Oh, one last thing...once you've beaten the game go back to Traverse Town and look around...you'll find a reason to keep playing (I think it's both characters...had it happen as Riku, but it'd make more sense if Sora had it too).

I was wondering if by CoM you are referring to the one for the Playstation 2 : Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories or the one for the GBA Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.... Or are they basically the same game. I know, dumb question.. But I've only played the GBA CoM.

even without the review i still want it so bad...
but i still dont understand y donald and goofy are not the main charecters like sora

Hahaha, yeah! I'm tired of Donald and Goofy not being of any use since KH2, the Dream Eaters are nice, but I still would've liked to be alongside them.

Seeing as no one else has deigned to answer, Chain of Memories and Re: Chain of Memories are the exact same game. The difference is better graphics, the good voice-acting cutscenes rather than just the text, and two of the Organization members on Riku's end die differently. Plus Marluxia gets an extra form after his machine thingy. Otherwise, same game.

She asked that in 10 other threads, I figured that question should be left alone now.

Yeah that got answered awhile ago.
