Kirby in Flash

Basically, I'm trying to emulate most of Kirby's moves in Flash. The reason is, as the topic description says, test myself and also learn on the way. Here's a second version that I've done, that includes walking, jumping and floating. Left and right to move, and up to jump. You can press up (or hold it) to float after you've reached the highest point of Kirby's jump:

I know the floating animation isn't too good, as he doesn't shake his lil' arms, but I'm working on that, heh.

Cute, and effective and simple test, well done.

pretty nice i like it, so what do you all plan on having kirby do?
Well, if I get a little bit better with the Kirby actions, maybe I'll make an environment for Kirby to interact with.

Thanks, it's good to see that even the test is fairly good. Means the only problems I face now are the ones I make myself as I try to add more actions, heh.

This looks great NintenDan! What kind of actions do you plan on making?
I'll add in a feature to exhale the air Kirby has inhaled to float, add a basic inhale move for when Kirby's on the ground and maybe add in a slide kick too. Once that's done, Kirby will be complete, heh. It might take a bit though.

I don't know what the hell that means, heh. I'd say it might be something with the site swfCabin, I can't help but feel as if it's been going dodgy.

By the way, got Kirby's floating animation going good so he waggles his arms when you float upwards. Then he stops wagglin' when you let him fly down to the ground. Also changed the keys you need to use to make him jump (switches from the up arrow to the 'X' key), and now when you're floating, you can press the 'Z' key to "deflate" and fall back down. Only problem is that I've yet to make him play the "deflate" animation, heh.

Was it kinda like GML language?
I have barely touched GameMaker (if that's what GML even stands for, I'm completely clueless, heh) so I wouldn't know.

Latest progress update of Kirby can be seen here:
http://www.swfcabin.com/open/1294046658

I've added an exhale ability, and even fixed up a lot of bugs that may have gone unnoticed in the previous one, heh. And boy, were they serious bugs (if you timed your next jump right when you landed, Kirby would just zoom straight up and off the screen without any signs of stopping...).

The only major bug I've seen with this new version is if you exhale and, while the exhale animation plays, hold the 'X' key to inhale, you'll immediately inhale; something I don't think happens in the actual Kirby games, where there's a little lag between exhaling and inhaling again I think.

EDIT: Two more bugs I found just a little while ago, heh:
1) When Kirby inhales, he kind of drops down a bit. Easily fixed, though
2) I swear if you exhale, then inhale again in midair, he floats up faster than before

Yep, he does I'm afraid. I just gave it a test.

It's going to be interesting fixing this one... I don't know what the heck's going wrong and why it does this. What I have noticed is if you inhale, exhale then inhale, you're second inhale speed will be quicker. However, at any point, if you touch the ground then inhale again, your speed is back to normal until you exhale and inhale again. Basically, you need to touch the ground to reset the speed, so I should look into what happens when Kirby hits the ground...

maybe with the inhale move on the ground, possibly put like a waddle dee or sumthin and have kirby suck it up and spit it back out? that would be a challenge if ur willing to put the effort into doing it.

That's a challenge I'm willing to take! I'll just put a random Waddle Dee on the ground and if Kirby inhales it from a certain distance, he'll suck it up and inflate. From there, he'll just swallow it, but at a later date he can spit it out and a star will shoot from his mouth. It will take a bit to do, but I'll give it a shot.

By the way, I've fixed all three bugs in the previous version and am proud to release what I think is a completely bugless basic Kirby (now with background and looping Kirby's Dreamland 3 music!). Also, you can float as high as you want, so don't float too high.

EDIT: Wouldn't hurt to give all of you the link to the newest version: http://www.swfcabin.com/open/1294112315

i never thought controlling kirby in a blank box could be s fun!im creating a shortcut for this
tongue.gif

can you please make a waddle dee one!and using the arrow keys and spacebar is way better than the letter keys.it should be like the original one not the one where you use x and z

Uhh... hate to break it to you paperyoshi, but this project sort of died a while ago, heh. Glad you liked the test a lot though, means a lot!
