Sonic the Hedgehog boss Takashi Iizuka has claimed that the IP has apparently only reached half of its potential. This comes via a new interview with Japanese magazine Continue (thanks, VGC) in which he explains that Sonic hasn't yet reached the heights the development team wanted from the very beginning.

In fact, it seems Sega was gunning for Disney from the start, and with the success of the Sonic movies recently, such a lofty goal may yet be in sight.

“To be honest, we believe that Sonic is still only halfway to reaching its full potential. When we created the first Sonic the Hedgehog, the development team at the time used to say, ‘Let’s aim for Disney.’ When I first joined Sega, I was also told to dream big… things like, ‘Use Sonic to surpass Disney’ and ‘One day, we’ll build a theme park.’

“Thirty-five years have passed, but we haven’t quite gotten there yet. Now that we’ve brought the movie to life, we want to share the appeal of Sonic with even more people who haven’t yet played the Sonic game series.”

He also states that while Sonic was once considered a property that appealed primarily to boys, it has since resonated with a lot more different audiences.

“Sonic was once considered a boy’s property, but we’ve branched out so much through games, film, TV and consumer products to reach new audiences. Now it is considered a true family brand with something for everyone.

“However, the young adult female audience is an interesting space for us, with potential for creative and compelling programs. Our female fans are among the biggest ‘Sonic’ fans, eager to express their fandom in fun and creative ways.

“Strategically, we want to make sure they know that we are thinking of them and their likes and preferences, specifically as we create consumer product programs for the future. And we know from past programs, such as fashion and makeup collabs, jewelry and more, that there is certainly an appetite in this space.”

The problem is not the brand. The problem is that SEGA shot themselves on the foot by deviating from the Sonic formula with games like Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006. For me, it started with ABSOLUTELY no... Sonic with... Sega Saturn. There's a Sonic 3D Blast port on Saturn, but I don't think that's a tent Sonic game. Ya know, the main Sonic game. Nintendo had just come out with Nintendo 64, and Mario 64 and wrecked the industry. Sonic Adventure games were awesome games, and should have been the "killer app" for Dreamcast, but instead SEGA spent money elsewhere because it was trying to be a PlayStation 2 competitor. It had to. But the fact that SEGA did not pour marketing on Sonic at the time is dumbfounding, IMHO.

SEGA gunning for Disney is kinda stupid, because Sonic is already a strong brand, it only needed to sell more units of the game itself.

The reason why I say this, is because I have a niece. And I play Sonic in front of her. She LOOOOOOOOVES saying "SEGA!" Whomever's decision is to keep the SEGA branding at the loading screen. Hats off to you.

The Sonic films needed to have more marketing done to it in order to reach more people. Continue the film franchise, dude. That's all you need to do. Once it reaches the critical mass it requires, go for the dream theme park. I think more sales of Sonic games + Sonic films is gonna get them over that hump.

That female demographic can either make or break the franchise, but tread lightly with that market. Don't go crazy with it.

I love Sonic, it's my favorite gaming franchise of all time. It will never reach the fame that Disney has, and Sega needs to focus more on giving us quality games instead of trying to follow dreams they might not be able to reach. Not to mention that Sonic isn't popular in Japan, and was always aimed at appealing to western audiences even down to his design back in the 1990s. Thank god they listened to us when it came to Sonic's original movie design. There's no way the film would have done well if they kept with Ugly Sonic. I can't wait to see what the next mainline game will be, it'll most likely be announced during the Game Awards at this point. Crossworlds is also selling well, and got great reviews. Frontiers was loved by many, and it even managed to appeal to Japan too. (I still need to finish it, I barely played it.) Shadow Generations was great too, and I even finished the newer port of Sonic Generations after completing Shadow Generations. It was the perfect sequel so to speak to Shadow the Hedgehog and it wasn't even near as cringe as that game was. (I used to defend that game when it came out when I was 15 lmao. It's not bad, certainly not the worst in the series but it could have been better. It really was a product of 2005.) As for the demographic, there's quite a few girls and women who love the series. Even if it was targeted towards boys I've seen numerous girls cosplay different characters.

Kind of a bad statement to make for a series as old as Mario, I know both are expanding well into the movie area, but they should be pretty popular by now.

Nintendo isn't making the statement. SEGA is making the statement. SEGA wanted SONIC to be almost as "famous" as Mario, but the issue is SEGA made mistakes during the heyday of Sega Genesis.

I was making a reference, that a series as old as Mario should be high up on the popularity.
