Only in recent years have I really started using LInkedIn for networking purposes and for work connections. Do you use LinkedIn?

Yes, I do I did get one of my jobs from it this year.

Just to connect with people, mainly friends, uni people, and co-workers. I've connected with a few people in the same industry as me but I don't really use it for networking.

Yeah it’s pretty big for networking and recruiters in the US and UK from what I’ve seen so figured was best to be a part of it and keep an eye on opportunities!
Its different here I guess In Canada people use it just for employment connections.

Recently I've been actively trying to improve my online presence on LinkedIn. I think it will really help my career down the line if I can grow an audience as continue to post professional content.

I never really saw how it can grow and make you look good other than having people support your page.

As you post content that people find useful/entertaining you'll start to build an audience who regularly likes and comments your posts. It helps establish credibility and based on your content people can decide to join your network (send a connection request) and sometimes your profile can be put in front of folks you wouldn't normally converse with. I've had CEOs reach out to me asking me for time to connect by phone and even though I haven't received an offer to make me want to change careers yet in those couple of instances I was actually able to promote my employer and help us get more business. So... at least in the business to business space LinkedIn has been really useful in my opinion.

I must not have looked at it much, didn't realize I could post content. Not sure what I could post.

You in IT right? I imagine if I was in that field I would seek out relatable information technology-related news articles and link it to my post and include a brief sentence or two about what I think about the article.

There are opportunities to learn other skills as well or improve upon your current ones. They have what they call Learning section and I think they're really useful.
