Mario isn't alone in his new adventure. Based on new footage released through Nintendo's Japanese website, Luigi is coming along for the ride in Super Mario 3D Land. A clip not only confirms the character is present, but features him in levels that Mario must also complete.
Luigi does seem to have slightly different attributes than his brother. Based on the footage, it appears Luigi can run faster as well as jump higher and farther than Mario.
Other clips on the site also highlight a new but familiar power for the Tanooki Suit. We already knew Mario could float and swing his tail, but it appears he'll also be able to turn into stone. This wasn't featured in any of our game demos, which leads us to wonder if the move is somehow earned later.
StreetPass functionality is also detailed on the site. It appears as though interaction with other players' 3DS systems will actually yield benefits through Toad Houses. The more StreetPasses a player performs, the more power-ups will be available for Mario when he visits his old Mushroom Kingdom friend.
One more interesting bit shown in footage - an evil version of Mario has returned. In the clip, the dark, twisted creature chases our hero, hurting him if it catches up.
