Imageepoch is the developer of such games as Luminous Arc, Last Ranker, 7th Dragon and Fate/Extra. In Japan, the studio is considered a top RPG maker. And starting next year, it's going to be a top RPG publisher as well.
The company held a press conference in Tokyo today to announce its first steps as a publisher. Two PSP titles will lead the way next year, but plans also include PS3, mobile platforms, and more.
The first game to bear the Imageepoch label will be Final Promise Story, an original PSP "dungeon RPG" featuring a strategic command-based battle system and a serious story with themes of "dark juvenile fantasy." The concept of the game is "Lost Game," a term used to mean that your characters are lost for good if they die in battle. Such death will have repercussions on the story as well.
Final Promise Story is being produced by Yousuke Uda (who did promotional work on 7th Dragon, Etrian Odyssey and Persona 3) and features character designs from Chinatsu Kurahana and music composition from GainGauge. A Japanese release is set for April 28.
Imageepoch will also be working with established franchises. Black Rock Shooter, a franchise that got its start on the Nico Nico Douga video sharing site, will see a summer 2011 PSP game conversion titled "Black Rock Shooter The Game." This is being directed by Kazuya Niinou and will have scenario work by Kazushige Nojima.
The story of the game adaptation is set in the year 2051 following years of war against invading aliens. Just 12 humans remain on Earth, and they rise up to face off against 7 apostles and countless mechs. Gameplay is said to have elements of RPGs and third person shooters.
Outside of PSP, Imageepoch is making a big move into online gaming. The company is teaming up with NHN Japan, which operates the Han Game social gaming site, for the free-to-play Chevalier Saga Tactics. This looks like a strategy RPG along the lines of Tactics Ogre, but it will also offer a "large scale battle mode" in which you command large armies online.
Chevalier Saga Tactics will begin as a browser-based PC game with a beta set to kick off in the Spring. Releases on PlayStation 3 and Smartphones are also planned.
The above games are part of Imageepoch's immediate business plan. The company has some big long term plans as well. At the press conference, it provided high level details on a few of its future titles:
* Type-Moon x Imageepoch: A collaborative effort with Fate series creator Type-Moon. This original game will take around three years to develop.
* Ark Project: An original simulation RPG.
* Mars Project: A collaboration with another JRPG creator.
* Remus Project: A JRPG conversion of an old PC game.
Further details on these games will be announced next year.
With Black Rock Shooter and Final Promise Story for PSP, the multiplatform Chevalier Saga Tactics, and details on the four long term projects coming next year, it looks like Imageepoch is going to be busy in 2011. And this doesn't even include the company's duties as a developer. Despite making the move to a publisher, Imageepoch will still be developing games for other publishers. One such game, set to arrive in 2011 through Sega, saw its first teaser image at the press conference.
