Crystal Tools? That's so 2009. The new thing in Square Enix tech is "Luminous."
You might have heard back in May that Square Enix had started recruiting top programmers to begin work on a new next generation engine. Luminous is the name for the resulting engine.
The name and some preliminary details were shared during a technology session today at the CESA Developers Conference in Tokyo's neighboring Yokohama.
Reporting from the event, Famitsu.com said the Luminous project is being headed up by Square Enix's Yoshihisa Hashimoto, who's serving as producer and technical director. Hashimoto MCed the CEDEC lecture with Luminous lead programmer Hiroshi Iwasaki at his side.
The main topic of the session was actually Square Enix Europe (or Eidos) technology like G2 Engine and CDC Engine. However, Hashimoto and Iwasaki closed off the session with surprise details on Luminous, which they described as "a game engine that can truly take on the world head on."
Points mentioned in slides include "Cross Platform," "Modularity," "Scalability," "Asset Management" and "Task Management." These sound like just the kinds of things you'd want your development environment to have.
Hashimoto did not show any samples of imagery produced by the engine. However, he said that we won't have to wait too long for a followup. He said to expect a wait of at most two years.
We'll be sure and check back come 2012 for the first Luminous-based games.
