PC sales have been on a steady decline, and the reasons for which have largely been attributed to increased adoption of tablets and ever-larger smartphones. Both IDC and Gartner have shown largely similar numbers in terms of PC sales, and Gartner has recently shown a blip of health in PC growth, but Asymco's Horace Dediu has pointed out that uncoupling Mac shipments from non-Mac PC shipments hints at a bigger story.

Gartner showed a slight increase in PC shipments in the second quarter of this year -- 0.1-percent. When Mac numbers are removed from this tally, Gartner's Windows PC figures alone result in a -0.8% growth in shipments, Dediu points out.

I think the main reason for the drop in PC sales is from too many companies and regular people making PCs to sell which causes only a few companies to have stable sales because there is too much competition from many other PC builders.

More people are also building, upgrading, and fixing their own PCs, so there is less need to buy a new PC since PC can last for many years like how nearly 25% of all PC users still use a 10+ year old PC running Windows XP or Vista.

Plus, a lot of stuff like smartphones, tablets, and eReaders have PC features like video and music playback, internet/wifi, and keyboards, so they can act like cheap PCs, so less tech savvy users like kids may not buy a PC until they go to college, tech related work, or no PC at all if they don't do anything which require a full size PC.
