Google’s Chromecast dongle has been pretty successful for the company but that’s apparently not enough — Google wants to have another go at making a comprehensive TV platform. Unnamed sources tell GigaOM that Google plans to launch a new platform called Android TV at its Google I/O developers conference in June and that it will place a heavy emphasis on both television and gaming.

Why would Google try to create yet another TV platform, especially since its first effort, Google TV, was a massive flop? GigaOM says that there are a couple of differences this time around. The first would be an emphasis on bringing Android games to your TV, which is something that you can’t get on Chromecast. The second is that “while Google TV was focused on marrying existing pay TV services with apps, Android TV will at least initially be all about online media services.”

I wonder if this would mean people with an Android TV device will be able to play games like Call of Duty, Need for Speed, Final Fantasy, and Sonic on their Android TV with a physical gamepad controller like the Ouya which uses Android.

Android TV sounds like a good operating system for the Nvidia Shield which is a Google Android gaming handheld.

Hopefully, the Ouya 2 will use Android TV as its operating system, and still have access to the Ouya game's marketplace.

I'm surprise to hear talk about android tv where I've been hearing others say that they were going to shut down android.

I heard Google may shut down their Nexus Android smartphone, and tablet brand, and replace it with Android Silver which is a certification program where phone and tablet makers to agree to upgrade their phones and tablets to a newer version of Android when Android is release. Plus, Android Silver phones and tablets would use the regular Android homescreen, and would come with fewer customizations, and unwanted apps which the user would now want.

I think Android TV will just be an operating system like Steam OS which will be given away for free to device makers, so there would be more gamers and video watchers who use Android TV to buy games, and TV shows on Google Play's online marketplace.
