Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary festivities paid off big time last week as one of the campaign's centerpieces, Super Mario Collection Special Pack, debuted at the top of the weekly sales charts. Its 308,000 units sold was a strong enough start to at long last take the top spot away from Pokemon Black & White.
Special Pack is just a Wii version of 16-bit Super Mario Bros. compilation Super Mario All-Stars, which was released to Japan as Super Mario Collection. The "Special Pack" part of the name comes from the bonus goods Nintendo has included. The package includes a special box, a specially prepared soundtrack CD, and a booklet with a Mario series history and some Mario development trivia. All this for the budget price of 2,500 yen (about $30).
Mario outsold its nearest competitor nearly four to one. That nearest competitor was Pokemon Black & White, which had claimed the top of the charts since its release on September 18. With an additional 82,000 units sold, this latest Pokemon title has now topped the 4.2 million mark.
The week was packed with new releases. Multiplatform titles like Vanquish, Naruto Ultimate Storm 2 and even Medal of Honor made it into the top 20. A few games from Sony's PlayStation Move launch lineup also debuted in the top 20, although we don't have specific sales figures for the hardware itself.
Here's the full Media Create top 20 for 10/18 to 10/24, courtesy of 4gamer. For older releases, life to date sales are included in parentheses.

* 5. Kirby's Epic Yarn (Nintendo, Wii): 35,633 (127,913)
* 6. Medal of Honor (Electronic Arts, PS3): 25,365

* 10. Wii Party (Nintendo, Wii): 15,895 (1,138,627)

* 19. Sports Champion (Sony, PS3): 6,349
* 20. Macross F (Namco Bandai, PS3): 6,123 (176,892)
It looks like those new releases did not get new players in the buying mood for hardware. All systems saw drops this week. This is particularly notable for the PlayStation 3, as we presume Sony was hoping to attract new audiences with the Move motion controller.
Here's full hardware chart. Last week's sales are in parentheses:
* 1. PSP: 32,591 (37,127)
* 2. PS3: 20,128 (22,201)
