I really like this idea.  I wish there was a 3D version and more playable characters though.  This feels kind of limited to me but still cool.  I'm surprised this hasn't been done earlier.  Hopefully Nintendo will be generous and add more to it in the future.
 
I thought it'd be available for the 3DS too but it doesn't matter to me anyway since I'm not getting it. Still, it's a nice idea. 
 
So... basically like a rom hack creator for Super Mario games?

Seems like a neat idea (very much in the vein of Little Big Planet or any game like that... except with Mario). 

Also I fear there will be way too many unbeatable "troll" levels. (Ones purposefully designed to be impossible to beat. Possibly really long and difficult to get through levels with no way to reach the end.)

that's been made already, it's called the lost levels.
 
The trailer was really cool. The fact you can swap from 8-bit mario to New Super Mario Bros is nice too. I hope they also include the second and third mario bros game because in all honesty I hate the graphics and sprites of the New Super Mario Bros.  Everytime I played it I wondered is this really a Mario game or just an easy platformer.

I for one though will be making incredible levels on Mario Maker to the point I will throw the gamepad down because I can't figure out what I made wrong haha.
