Facebook wants even the people who hate Facebook to use Messenger, so it’s opening the option to sign up for its chat app without an account on its social network. Users can sign up with just a first name, last name, and phone number, starting today in the US, Canada, Peru, and Venezuela before the feature comes elsewhere.

This is good news for people who want to chat with other people or send text messages via Wi-fi with Messenger, but don't want a Facebook account, but need to talk to people on Facebook with Messenger.

I wonder how many people there are who want to use Messenger, but don't already have a Facebook account.

I think most people who went to college in the last few years, are in college, or plan to go to college soon already have a Facebook account since it is one of the better social networks for talking about homework, events at college like college football game or party, or asking to people if they want to buy your old books, and school supplies after you finish a class.

Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter does not seem as good for talking about school because of their limitations like disappearing images, filtered image, and limit of 140 characters per message.

I'm not sure there's many people in the world that don't have a Facebook page and profile anyway to be honest, so I'm not sure if it will make much difference to be honest.

For Facebook though, it's a good way of trying to reel in new customers though, so if your one of the few people that don't have a facebook prfile already, messenger may well tempt you in to it.

I think foreigners from other countries like China, Turkey, etc don't have Facebook since Facebook is mainly a western website.

But, WhatsApp (also owned by Facebook) is popular with foreigners from China, etc because it allows them to send free text messages over the internet with other users.

I think Facebook wants Messenger to be popular with Foreigners like WhatsApp which many foreigner uses to text on their phones for free over the internet by just using a cell phone number to register for an account.

Facebook is also blocked in some non-voting countries like Iran, so not requiring a Facebook account to use Messenger could be one way for Facebook to get more users from more restrictive countries which don't ban Messenger.

I could see some problems with the phone number as it could be fake or someone else's.

I think you most likely have to verify your phone number by entering a code which Messenger will text to your phone number on your cell phone.

I can also see a problem with people changing phone numbers, or someone using your old number from a cell phone number which you no longer use, so your number expired, and someone else is using your number which you no longer use.

It is too bad that Facebook does not let you use an e-mail address to sign-up for Messenger, and requires your phone number, and full name.

This seems quite weird, in my opinion. I'm not too fond of giving Facebook my phone number. I don't even do it on my Facebook account. I would never do it just to be able to use their chat script. I'd rather use Skype.
I agree, giving a phone number away is uncomfortable to many people who are concerned about their privacy. I think there are free ways to get an online phone number which you can use to text with people over the internet with your online phone number.

But, I'm sure there are a lot of people who choose the convenience of just typing in their name, and  cell phone number on Messenger to signup for Messenger without the need to verify your e-mail by clicking on a link in an E-mail from Facebook.
