If there was one thing conspicuously absent from Nintendo's press conference at E3 2011 it was a new Metroid game for Wii U or 3DS. Heck, even Pikmin for Wii U was mentioned at a round table event this week. But on the very last day of E3 I found myself back at the Nintendo back stage area playing a few more Wii U demos, and lo and behold I found Metroid -- or a stripped down, minigame version of it called Battle Mii.
As I began the demo, holding the brand new Wii U controller, I was shocked to see Samus's classic orange gunship lift off its pad. I controlled this ship, hovering above four other players, who appeared to be Miis decked out in Varia-suit knockoffs. These suits actually aren't just for show, though -- the Mii players on the ground can enter Morph Ball mode and roll into small areas that takes them to sniper roosts.
It was surprising to stumble across this mash-up of Metroid and Mii elements, since almost of the other demos involved Mario or Link, with Samus conspicuously M.I.A. Of course, Battle Mii isn't a new Metroid Prime (or Metroid Dread!), but it is a nice little reminder that Nintendo hasnn't given up on Metroid after Metroid: Other M. Hopefully we'll hear more about Samus's next game in 2011 -- Link isn't the only one who turned 25 this year!
