Xbox Microsoft’s cancelled Xbox mini cloud streaming console Patent

The patent, filed in 2022, is assigned to Chris Kujawski, a principal designer at Microsoft. Kujawski led the design for the Xbox Series S / X consoles.

Back in 2021, Microsoft announced that it was working on a dedicated streaming device for Xbox Game Pass. That device was later revealed to be codenamed Keystone, which took the form of a streaming box that would sit under your TV, cost a fraction of the price of a normal Xbox, and enable the ability to play Xbox games via the cloud.

Unfortunately, it appears Microsoft has since scrapped plans to ship Xbox Keystone due to an inability to bring the price down to a level where it made sense for customers. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer is on record saying the device should have costed around $99 or $129, but the company was unable to achieve this.

This means we never really got a chance to see what Xbox Keystone looked like. The closest we ever got was in a photo posted by Phil Spencer, which just so happened to include a front-on view of the Xbox Keystone device on a shelf. That’s as much as we’ve ever seen of the console, that is until now.

I feel not many people will buy a Xbox mini cloud streaming console because many people already own a desktop PC, laptop, tablet, other consoles, and smartphone which maybe good enough for using game streaming services.

Why did they need to make a mini console strictly for Game Pass when you could stream Game Pass anywhere already?

This is a redundancy so new buyers would be confused anyways. Glad it didn't exist.

I think Microsoft may build a few thousand streaming consoles in the future, and sell the streaming console on its website. Game console collectors, and people who are not tech savy may buy this console.

I feel most people who want a cheap Xbox console will buy a used Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One instead of a streaming Xbox console if they don't want to play Microsoft games on a non-Xbox device.
