And another goes down hill, Microsoft is owning so much nowadays that there is no completion of anything. Hell Skype went down hill.

Wonder if the timed PS5 exclusive Ghostwire tokyo IP is owned by Microsoft now since the game is being published by bethesda.

I wasn't too bummed but seeing Carmac's tweet my knees sank.
If we get a proper Quake sequel that's Xbox exclusive it would break my heart.

Bethesda Founder comments on it, from dualshockers:

“I think this is an extremely interesting acquisition on the part of both groups,” said Weaver. “Microsoft deepens their bench instantly with one of the most experienced companies in entertainment software (during a time when video game sales are at an all-time high), and Bethesda gets the benefit of concentrating their creative firepower on software that feeds the Microsoft pipelines. A good prospective marriage of interests with a large domestic public partner.”

When asked if he thinks the acquisition will influence upcoming games like Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI, Weaver said he thinks Microsoft understands that Bethesda knows how to make quality titles. He adds that the key to making great products is to keep executives away until the game is ready to be released. Additionally, he says he’s yet to meet an executive who wants to get a game out sooner because of sales.

“I do not think the elimination of the disc drive will prove to be overly material,” continues Weaver. “Both 9th generation consoles will have increased processing capability and SSDs. Once people get used to this short-term perceived limitation, they will realize a dramatic increase in reliability and responsiveness. High-speed internet will provide the bridge.”

high speed internet (without bandwidth limits) is still a long ways off for many.

That is a pretty big purchase. Happy for Xbox gamers. I wonder if Sony is going to buy a big gaming company to compete now

I feel like Nintendo has just given up on competing with Sony and Microsoft though. They aren't in the same market anymore as the two big boys

Hopefully, Microsoft owning Bethesda means there would be many cool games being released for the Xbox on a regular basis.

Read an update from Xbox chief executive officer Tim Stuart :

Yes. The goal here is, we’re—I’ll say it from a cross-platform perspective. Microsoft is a platform. We’re one of the first to really support Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite across platforms. So we highly encourage cross-platform play, simply from this landscape of, if it’s good for the gaming ecosystem, it’s good for us, classic rising tide lifts all boats.

What we’ll do in the long run is, we don’t have intentions of just pulling all of Bethesda content out of Sony or Nintendo or otherwise. But what we want is, we want that content, in the long run, to be either first or better or best or pick your differentiated experience, on our platforms. We will want Bethesda content to show up the best as—on our platforms.

Yes. That’s not a point about being exclusive. That’s not a point about we’re being—adjusting timing or content or road map. But if you think about something like Game Pass, if it shows up best in Game Pass, that’s what we want to see, and we want to drive our Game Pass subscriber base through that Bethesda pipeline.

So again, I’m not announcing pulling content from platforms one way or the other. But I suspect you’ll continue to see us shift towards a first or better or best approach on our platforms.

Lots of people thinking this won’t mean the games are exclusive to Xbox. I think they will be exclusive, after the current commitments are fulfilled at least. Can’t see Microsoft letting Bethesda games on other consoles after paying that much for them. I’m sad about titles like Doom and Wolfenstein if they end up exclusive because I quite enjoy those series. Not as big of a fan of titles like Fallout and Elder Scrolls, but there’s some massive IPs that might be Xbox exclusive this gen.

This is an exciting day for Xbox. Today we officially complete the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks. It’s an honor to welcome the eight incredibly talented development studios – Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios – and their passionate global communities to the Xbox family. Now that everything is official, we can begin working together to deliver more great games to everyone. At every step building toward this moment, I’ve been inspired and motivated by the creativity, insight, and community-first approach of the talented people at Bethesda. Our goal is to give these teams the best foundation for doing their greatest work and to learn from them as we continue to build Xbox into an inclusive platform for all players.

This is the next step in building an industry-leading first party studios team, a commitment we have to our Xbox community. With the addition of the Bethesda creative teams, gamers should know that Xbox consoles, PC, and Game Pass will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.

As we shared previously, it’s vitally important that Bethesda continues making games the way it always has. We look forward to empowering Bethesda’s creative teams to reach even more players around the world, helping make future Bethesda titles the biggest and most popular games in their history. Xbox and Bethesda have long shared a common vision for the future of gaming. Both as fans and as creators, Bethesda understands the potential of Xbox Game Pass.

We would also like to honor the life and memory of my close friend Robert A. Altman, founder of ZeniMax Media. Robert believed deeply in the power of gaming and we are privileged to be able to continue his work by joining forces with the teams he built and led for many years. I will miss the opportunity to work directly with him on the future of our combined teams but I know that his spirit will live on in the shared work we do and motivate us to make this partnership all he envisioned.

Thank you to all our players for joining us on this incredible journey and to the millions of Bethesda fans around the world. Now that we’re one team, we can start working together on the future ahead. We will have more to share about what’s next for our teams later this year. In the meantime, to properly celebrate this special moment, we are bringing additional Bethesda games into Xbox Game Pass later this week. Stay tuned for more details!
