Microsoft updated the official Skype blog on Tuesday with confirmation that the Windows Live Messenger client will be retired. The news arrives just one day after unnamed sources revealed Microsoft's Messenger plans, and after Tom's posted its own Windows Live Messenger Tips & Tricks guide.

Messenger will be replaced with Skype.

I haven't actively used Messenger in years, and Skype seems slightly easier to use.

I think your account details, and contacts will just be moved to Skype's server, so Skype be the new Windows Live Messenger, but with better video chat supports.

But, it would be a good idea to backup your friends Messenger e-mail account just in case you have to resend all your friend-invites.

Microsoft most likely is doing this to save money and time by just maintaining one IM and Video chat software which is Skype, and to make the userbase of Skype bigger, so Skype is worth more money to raise the value of MS.

Plus, Skype is available for alternative operating systems like Linux, and Mac, so people on Windows can more easily chat with people on Linux, and Mac.

I'd back up your contacts too just in case of any problems, but it seems contacts should remain in tact.

This effort started with the release of Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows a few weeks ago, which allows you to sign into Skype using a Microsoft account. Now Messenger users just need to update to the latest version of Skype, sign in using a Microsoft account, and their Messenger contacts will be there.

it's been ages since I last touch MSN, I just use skype these days.
