This is a better deal then the $199 upgrade for non-Students after Janusry 31st. I think if you plan to upgrade from an older version of Windows to Windows 8 Pro, you might as well just buy it now at Microsoft Windows 8 Website for $40 at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8

The lack of a start menu and start button can put many people off from using Windows 8. The good news is third-party software maker like Iobit has come out with free desktop programs like Start Menu 8 which brings back the start menu and start button on Windows 8, and gives you the option to start your computer to the classic desktop found in 7, Vista, and other versions of Windows.

Some of the third-party startmenu program may even work better with more customization and features then the startmenu found in Windows 7 and Vista, so it could be better that the Windows Startmenu was left out in Windows 8. Plus, some people may not want the startmenu in the classic Windows desktop in 8, and may just want a taskbar without a start button.

Windows 3.1 before Windows 95-7 never had a startmenu or taskbar, and it was pretty easy to use for many people who used Windows 3.1 back in the early 90s.

A lot of version of Linux, Google Chrome OS, Apple Mac OS X, and mobile operating systems like Android, iOS, Blackberry, WebOS, etc also don't have Startmenu, so maybe Windows is trying to design the OS, so it works similar to other OS which never had a startmenu to begin with.

I think this might be bad for students to use as the programs they need for school may not work on W8.

I read most software which works for Windows 7 and Vista would work on 8 because 8 is backwards compatible with a lot of older software and computer hardware. All the programs I used on 7, and Vista work for 8.

Most students who don't take accounting, sciences, and computer courses which require computers should be fine with 8 since Microsoft Office 2007-2013 works on 8, and a lot of students who mainly take English, History, Politics, Art, and other courses mainly use their computers for typing and printing out essays, reports, making presentation slide shows, and using a web browser to look up stuff.
