Seven year old hardware continues to rake in the cash

MICROSOFT CLAIMS to have sold 67 million Xbox 360 consoles as it prepares to move the brand out of the living room.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 games console has been a slow burner as Nintendo's Wii took all the glory until 2009. However Microsoft claims the console is bucking the trend of other consoles by showing continued growth, something the firm wants to continue by making the Xbox a "premium entertainment service".

Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer of the Interactive Entertainment Division at Microsoft said the firm has shifted 67 million Xbox 360 consoles, managing to rake in $56bn. Mehdi's claimed figures should more than recoup the billions Microsoft sunk into its Xbox venture since 2001.

However Mehdi said the company will tip up at next month's E3 convention with new ways of using an Xbox, along with new games. Further down the road, Mehdi said the Xbox 360 will integrate with Windows 8 devices to share content.
Mehdi said, "Whether on your PC, tablet, TV or phone, Xbox will be a gateway to the best in music and video, your favourite games and instant access to your friends. With the launch of Windows 8, we'll bring Xbox entertainment to everyone. With Xbox on Windows 8 devices, we rapidly accelerate the reach of Xbox entertainment from more than 60 million people to hundreds of millions of people worldwide."
Microsoft has slowly been edging the Xbox brand into more of its products. The company's Windows Phone operating system already uses the Xbox branding for its gaming services, and the firm now needs to diversify the Xbox brand in order to extend it from simply console gaming to take advantage of the growth in smartphone and tablet gaming. µ

Cool, I like the sounds of the new features which will be buit-into Windows 8 and Xbox. I hope this mean we can soon play Xbox 360 games on Windows 8 computers, Smartphones, Tablets, and other devices.

I wonder if we can soon use the Xbox 360 as a computer to browse the web, do homework, install Windows programs, and do other tasks we usually do on a computer or laptop.

If there is a huge demand from PC gamers to play Console games on their Windows 8 Computer, laptop or Tablet, I bet Microsoft would consider making it possible to play Xbox 360 game on Windows 8 if it can make money by selling more operating systems, software, computer hardware while beating the competition like Apple, Sony, Nintendo, etc by allowing people to play 360 games easily on a PC.

Plus, most PC that would ship with Windows 8 will probably have a CPU, video card, and RAM which is fast enough for Xbox 360 games since the Xbox 360 is very old now. Xbox 360 games are recorded on DVD disc, and there is already a Xbox 360 style USB nad Bluetooth style controller for the PC.

I saw on the news that said game console hardware is not very profitable for gaming companies, and Microsoft make most of their money from software, DLC, Xbox Live sales, Xbox Live Games, and expansion packs since software is cheaper to produce.

Plus, hackers found ways to pirate games for the Xbox 360, and other consoles, so consoles are not doing very well at stoping piracy from the determined pirate and hacker.

I'm not really sure that Microsoft wants to be a console maker in 10 years or shorter if people can someday just use their Windows 8 Laptop to play console quality games with a wireless controller similar to the Xbox 360 since most midend 500-600 laptop will someday be fast enough to play console quality games on a TV or the monitor at 720-1080P without any frame rate stuttering.

It would mean their next Xbox would be a PC and not a console. Which if I am thinking right is giving themselves competition.

Yes, but maybe it is Microsoft plan to make the Xbox 360 staff compete against the Windows 8 PC staff, so everyone will work harder for more sales on both Xbox and Windows 8, so the workers won't get layoff letters if one is selling poorly because of the competition from the PC or Xbox 360 side.

I also think a lot of people also might want an affordable 500 dollar console with a built-in PC, and can be used for typing out homework, movies, web browsing, video editing, printing and other PC tasks when they need to take a break from gaming or during loading game screens. All-in-one devices are very popular these days because they are cheap, and save a lot of space.

Just not going to work out, that would just kill the whole point of consoles.

I think it would be awesome to be able to play Xbox 360 games on a PC. They have game emulators that you can download on your computer, couldn't that possibly be taking the whole point of consoles to begin with? I know it would kind of take away the whole point of consoles, but I think this could be good to save money.

Well yea but companies care about making money, not about their customers saving money.

This is something really god as I dont have an xbox and some games are only for xbox so it should be fun....but I am a hater, the windows 8 logo is the worst logo for windows ever even the windows95 logo looked better in my oppinon XD

Really? You criticize an OS based on its logo? :P

Game companies can make more money by not making their games exclusives to only one device. This is why EA, Rovio : Angry Birds, MineCraft, etc earn a lot of money because they make their games for almost all devices and consoles like PS3, 360, PC, Wii, Android, iOS, Blackberry, and other platforms, so more people can buy them.

The consumers who want to save money might not buy a game console to play only 1-2 games, but is probably more likely to buy a game made for the Xbox 360 which is playable on their Windows 8 computer since they only need to buy the game, and not the console since they can use their PC to play.

Windows is also one of Microsoft top earning products. I think some computer staff who work at a office might recommend Windows 8 if they know it can also be used to play Xbox 360 games as well.
