Microsoft’s Satya Nadella has confirmed that the next version of Windows, probably Windows 9, will unify the Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox operating systems into “one single converged operating system” Microsoft had previously made some moves towards unification with Universal Windows Apps that run across all three platforms, but this new version of Windows will go a lot further: “This means [we'll have] one operating system that covers all screen sizes.”

The question now, of course, is whether this will be the one-Windows-to-rule-them-all (and in the darkness bind them) that Microsoft desperately needs in order to stay relevant in a rapidly shifting personal computing environment, or whether it’ll just be a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none flop — a bit like Windows 8.

This sounds interesting. I wonder if this means I can play Xbox One games on Windows, and use software like Microsoft Office, and Firefox on the Xbox One and Windows Phone.

I guest this also could mean that Microsoft is turning Windows into a mobile and entertainment operating system like Windows Phone, Android, and iOS.

It would be a good thing, unless it sucks then MS is really going to mess themselves up.

It sounds like people would have to download or buy third-party software like Start8, or Classic Shell which is free to make Windows easier to use even when Windows 9 /One is released.

It seems Microsoft is planning to make software and operating system for ignorant people who are not very tech-savvy, and want their computer to be extremely easy to use where they just click on a shortcut pictures to do different tasks like e-mail like the iPad, or iPhone.

hmmmm, if they wanted to do that they should have done it years ago. Now days people know how to use most of this stuff, it's nice to come out with a dumb down version but I'm sure by now a large amount of their core fans want complicated stuff like linux.

I agree most of the core fans of Windows are probably now in their 20-50s and want a more mature and custumizable operating system, and has experience with a lot of different operating systems like Mac, Linux, Dos, and UNIX. I read some people like the Mac operating system from Apple because it is based on UNIX/BSD UNIX which is also the PS4's operating system, so Mac OS X can do a lot of stuff similar to UNIX.
