If you like to keep track of Shigeru Miyamoto's activities because they often provide hints to his upcoming games, there's some pertinent info coming out of Nintendo's recent shareholder briefing. During a Q&A session, Miyamoto said that he's been swimming quite a bit of late and also spending time with children as part of a youth guidance council.
Past "hobby" talk from Miyamoto lead to Pikmin, from his talk of gardening, and, more recently, Nintendogs + Cats, from his talk of taking care of cats.
Before you start speculating about swimming games and parenting simulators, it should be noted that Miyamoto may not have been speaking about his hobbies here. He was using the swimming and youth work as examples of some of his activities as a means of showing how active he is.
After listing these activities, he gave some solid hints about some of his upcoming plans. "I think that next year I can probably deliver something new," he said. I'm still active on the development scene, so please look forward to [my output]. It's been nearly 10 years since I made the Pikmin character, so I feel this is the year where I must at long last make a new character."
This seems to be suggesting a new character, and possibly a new game to go along with it, as early as next year!
Before that, however, Miyamoto has some pressing projects. He also said during the Q&A session that work on Nintendogs + Cats will soon be completed. Regarding the upcoming Pikmin game, he said "Among my present promises, I have to finish Pikmin quickly, so production is progressing extremely well."
So Pikmin, Nintendogs + Cats, and mystery title + mystery character. 2011 may be the year of Miyamoto.
