Arcade-style 2D shooters make up another one of those genres that the Xbox 360 has surprisingly managed to lead this generation (the list also includes Japanese RPGs and love sims). This very hardcore genre was the focus of Microsoft Japan's latest gaming event, the Xbox 360 Shooting Festa.

Held Friday evening at the massive FujiSoft complex in Akihabara, this event gathered shooting fanatics who had registered in advance. Over the course of two hours, the group was given a chance to play Xbox 360 shooters both old and new, including upcoming titles like DoDonPachi Daioujou Black Label X, Shooting Love 200X, Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku-tachi Extra, and R-Type Dimensions.

Death Smiles, an updated port of an October 2007 arcade title, also made a surprise appearance in playable form, and was a big enough draw that practically everyone in attendance lined up to sample it for five minutes. All players walked home with a special collectors mug.

Both Death Smiles and DoDonPachi were the center of attention at the event. DoDonPachi, which was recently delayed in Japan from its December 25 release to Winter, was used for a score attack tournament. The winning player, Mon, cleared the required stage of play with nearly 3 billion points (his exact score was 2,829,659,250 points, and he just edged out RadiantSilver's 2,570,700,480). Mon walked home with a new fighting stick from Hori and a surprise gift: a collection of five Xbox 360 shooters.
