Microsoft has revealed they are expecting to sell in excess of three million units of the highly anticipated motion control input system, Kinect, this holiday season.

"We believe this will be the biggest launch in our history, for Xbox. We will sell more Kinect sensors than we did [systems] at Xbox 360 launch," Microsoft product manager Aaron Greenberg told gaming website Gamasutra.

Greenberg cited the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on Kinect marketing as the key reason for the lofty projections. In fact, the marketing budget was so high that it has exceeded the amount spent on the original Xbox 360 launch.

With Kinect's release just around the corner, will Microsoft's projections prove accurate? Stick around for IGN's continued coverage.

this is my lol for the day. 3 million? Be happy if you push 1 million MS.

There are a large amount of casual gamers who play casual games and want to play a few action and shooting games, so the Kinect might please those people. I'm sure MS come out with some sort of a bundle during Christmas to make the Kinect more appealing for most gamers like Bundling the Kinect for free with the Xbox 360 slim elite edition.

I can't see the Kinect doing well with gamers under the age of 25.

I can't see anyone over 18 playing it to much, at all. And there aren't many or any Shooters, and like 1 or 2 Action games.

I believe halo won't be using kinect so there goes a whole bunch of loss sales.
I heard Halo Reach would be compatible with Kinect. And it doesn't matter, it would be hard playing shooters anyway. How could you specify reloading, knifing, etc.?

true, but kinect fails to support what hardcore fans want out of a game system.
There are no Hardcore games for Kinect, other than Reach, if it is compatible. It's for Casual gamers, people that just want to support Microsoft, and/or people that want to make their 360 experience the best.

The very diehard Xbox supporters with money will just buy the Kinect as a collectors item, or to get the Kinect cheap for buying the Xbox 360 slim model instead of buying both the 360 slim and Kinect seperately.

According to a blog I read, The Kinect will be bundle with the 250GB slim 360 for $399 and $299 for the 4GB Arcade model + Kinect, so it will be a savings of 50 dollars then buying the kinect and Slim 360 separately since the Kinect cost $150 and the Slim 360 cost $299. I bet MS or a store like Best Buy probably also bundle an decent older or newer game like Oblivion, Fable 2, Call of Duty Black Ops, GTA 4, etc for older gamers like they do most of the time during Christmas here in Canada.

Plus, the bundle comes with Kinect Adventures which is A casual game.

Looks like the Kinect is being marketed to the family game night (non-video game market which mostly watch movies or play board games like monopoly) and younger 4-11 years old age group, and possibly senior citizens and fat people who need to exercise more market in this ad. Plus, some kids might ask for this Kinect bundle as a way to get an MS Xbox 360 slim for Christmas by saying they use the Kinect for exercising and family game night.

But, I got a feeling the Kinect being sold as a stand a lone product will not sell very well, but people who don't own a 360 or want a newer slim 360 might as well get the Kinect bundle since it is just an extra $100 and comes with a game or two.

Even with all these bundles and deals I doubt the Kunect will sell. The Xbox was primarily targeted to hardcore gamers, not party casuals. If someone wants a motion system, they're better off getting a Wii.

Indeed, it might be too late for Xbox to change their image so fast, but I wonder how MS well spend the 100s of millions of dollars to market the kinect. Maybe some people who already own a Wii might want the Kinect bundle to play Party Casual games and Halo on their spare time as well.
