Geeks everywhere (including myself) are screaming with excitement. Myst, one of the best-selling video games of all-time, is being adapted for the silver screen. Roserock Films and Gran Via Productions are teaming up with Adrian Vanderbosch and Isacc Testerman to bring the interactive experience to the big screen.

Myst originally released in 1991 to a surprisingly successful response. The game centers on the Stranger, who travels to the mysterious island of Myst. The player immerses themselves in a first person interaction with the environment and as he/she advances, the story develops in different ways. Depending on how you play the game, it has alternate endings.

The popularity of Myst caused it to be ported to many other video game systems, and even spawned numerous novels taking place in the same world. The producers of the film adaptation believe the novels give a solid storyline to base a narrative around.

"Our aim with this project is to stretch the genres it operates within, much like the source material did," Vanderbosch said. "It is such an innovative property and the best service we can do to it is to maintain that spirit. By utilizing the novels as our primary source, we have the opportunity to offer audiences the essence of Myst without being limited only to the famous island of the first game."

So basically, it sounds like this film won't be a direct adaptation of the game's storyline, but rather, just another story taking place in the Myst-universe.

Currently, there's no deets on directors or cast members, but regardless, this is exciting news. As a nerd, it's been difficult to watch the drama unfold with the forever-in-development Halo film that's constantly changing hands (and who knows what other problems it has). Hopefully the same fate doesn't follow Myst, but it sounds like Vanderbosch and Testerman are both extremely excited to get the project underway. Hopefully they get the details figured out soon.

this game was extremely difficult! But I'm sure it will make a great movie that should be on the same level as LOST.
