Paramount and Namco Bandai have announced that they are co-publishing the new Star Trek videogame in the first quarter of 2013.
Originally teased at last year's E3, it's been billed as an action-packed combat game, and will be on shelves prior to May 17th release of new JJ Abrams Star Trek film.
The game will be based on a standalone storyline that follows on from the film, featuring Kirk and Spock on a two-player co-operative space adventure with plenty of combat and 23rd-Century weapons and gear.
Star Trek is being developed by Ontario-based studio Digital Extremes, which also handled Bioshock 2 and The Darkness 2. Production is being overseen by Brian Miller, a creative executive at Paramount. The original story is being written my God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk working with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtsmann, who have written for the film and the series.
Olivier Comte, Namco's SVP of marketing, Sales and Publishing, had this to say: "Star Trek continues to be one of the most beloved entertainment properties around the world, and NAMCO BANDAI Games Europe is extremely excited to be teaming up with Paramount Pictures to create the definitive Star Trek interactive experience."
