With nearly 3 million units sold and two consecutive weeks at the top of the Japanese sales charts, Nintendo doesn't really need to give New Super Mario Bros. Wii much of a push in its home territory. But it will be doing just over the next couple of months as it tries out a marketing technique one doesn't usually associate with the Nintendo brand: the tournament.

Nintendo Japan announced today plans for the "Coin Battle Japan Number One Tournament," a New Super Mario Bros. Wii tournament that will tour Japan over February and March. Players in seven major cities across the island nation will be able to take part in solo and pair play, with the winner determined by the number of coins collected. This will all come together in a finals round to be held in Tokyo on March 27.

For Japan-based readers, Nintendo has set up an official site for the tournament where players can sign up for tournament slots.

This tournament is a Japan-only thing, but with New Super Mario Bros. Wii conquering the world as a whole, perhaps Nintendo's regional offices will get some promotional ideas.
