“So, when release day rolls around for the next Need for Speed, you will be able to play through a single player experience completely offline,” the developer claims. “Before you ask, and we know you will, this does mean you will be able to pause the game.”

Wasn't liked in the previous game and it is good to see the developer listening and not including it in this release.

Wait, I haven't been keeping up with NfS. Does that mean there was a racing game with online multiplayer only? Who thought that was a good idea? Imagine being a kid and getting that game, but not having Xbox Live or PS Plus. At least they're listening to fans, but that probably screwed a lot of people out of playing their game.

There was Need for Speed World which was a free online-only open world MMORPG racing game for PC. A lot of the races in NFS World could be played offline because gamers mostly raced against the computer/bots, but the online feature is used for online saves, and seeing other racers cruise around the city.

Need for Speed World is now discontinued.

Need for Speed No Limit for Google Android and iOS needs an internet connection.

The online requirement is not good, but it is a free game, so more gamers are less likely to complain.

I'm sure many internetless people will be happy about this.

Never understood why they went with an always online thing for the previous Need for Speed. One day games may become always online but for the moment there are too many problems with internet speed etc. To be fair anyone that can afford to have a console and NFS can probably afford internet

The fact this is supposedly news shows just how badly some modern games have gone off track (no pun intended). I mean, why wouldn't a racing game be playable offline? Why shouldn't you be allowed to pause it? It's pretty insulting they did the opposite with any past Need for Speed games, especially given how the earlier ones worked fine without any of this online only nonsense.

Basically the last Need for Speed game required you to have an internet connection to play. The races could still be played solo (to the best of my knowledge) but you still needed to have an internet connection. Many games seem to be the same nowadays unfortunately.

I think the online connection requirement in games like previous NFS is sometimes used to prevent piracy, cheating, track gamers to see which races they mostly play, and what parts of the game which they drive to most often.

If gamers use headphones with a mic plug into their console, the mic and online connection can also be used to listen into the background audio from the mic on the headphones which they plug into their console. The audio can be useful for helping creating DLC and new games based on background conversations, noise, music, and other sounds which gamers listen to while gaming.

Sadly, a lot of games still contain problems because of a lack of testing, so the information collected from tracking users maybe used to help create Updates for a game to fix problems which happen after the game is released.
