I am running a windows 7 pc and recently I have not been able to download anything that is over a about 5mb or thats not from a certain site(for example a torrent or an update for a program). I have tried using IE, Firefox, and Chrome but when I click the download button, the download wont even start! It just hangs there with the loading circle for some reason. Any suggestions?

Could it maybe be blocking the pop-up that initiates the download?

Yeah, nothing pops up at all! Its been doing this for days and I'm getting tired of it. I googled my problem but I just got other problems, maybe because I didn't word it properly... As for antivirus, incase you need to know, I use avast antivirus. Could that be blocking it?

I honestly have never seen an issue like that... And I'm the computer crash queen. If you remember exactly when it started you could try to restore it to a point before it started. Or even look at any thing you have installed right before the issue occurred. If it was your antivirus, they usually pop up telling you that it blocked the website or file. I would say try to reinstall the browser but since you cant download anything that would appear to be a moot point (thats why I keep all my important installers saved). I have the chrome installer if you think it would help I can email it to you.

You said you can download via torrent.

Are your downloads timing out? If so, check the speed and quality of your internet connection.

Are you behind on any critical Windows updates?

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?

Have you recently made any notable changes to your computer, such as the installation of a new program? How long have you been running the anti-virus, and have you tried downloading things with it turned off?

I just tried the article but that didn't work, and I've gotten some pretty important files on my pc that I would lose if I restored, so I guess I won't be trying that... :/ I'll try deleting and reinstalling Firefox and Chrome, maybe that'll help. Thanks for the help btw, I really appreciate it! :)

Sure, no problem. Keep us posted on what happens?

It'd be great if you could answer Zexis' questions, cornbread. That way one of us may be able to help you better.

I'm sorry, I'm using my 3DS to browse and I scrolled right past Zexis' question! Our connection plan gives about 3.2mbps download and 867.3kbps upload ( this is no connection for a gamer :/ ), there is about 200gb of free space, I have been skipping windows updates mainly because they were annoying me, and I didn't know I they were critical or not, so I guess I should check them out. No major changes have happened to the comp, and I'm about to try turning avast off.

The updates are usually quite important. There are some petty ones that I don't install but I make sure my computer stays updated. So do those too.

I see quite a few windows 7 updates I've missed out on, and I'm currently downloading them, I already tried disabling avast but that didn't work.

You may need to restore. Not reformat. Just restore to a previously saved point before the issues occurred. You shouldn't lose anything in that process.

Which sites in particular are you having this issue with? Are you able to download in your browser at all (try downloading something from download.com)? Is it giving you an error or just hanging?

It's just hanging, and I've tried everything thats been suggested. I download from mostly gaming sites or just other places like media fire or something, but the other day, I was able to download a java update flawlessly... Is it the type of site I'm downloading from that's causing the problem? This is crazy :(

That is so strange. Have you tried a download manager like jDownloader or something to see if it will download...?

Alright, I tried one last time before using the download manager to download, and its working fine all of a sudden! What sick joke is this? Oh well, I guess I might have my downloads back but maybe until something goes wrong again.. thanks for helping out everyone!
