Earlier this month a modder identified only as GonzoMPM-1 made a post on BenHeck.com detailing his latest project: cramming a NES into a Super Joy light gun. According to the post, GonzoMPM-1 gutted a Power Play/Super Joy III system and reconfigured the components so that they could fit into the base of the Super Joy's included light-gun attachment.
First, GonzoMPM-1 mounted the NOAC (Nintendo On A Chip) board into the inside of the handle of the gun, from there he carved out and attached a AA battery supply, a D-pad, AC adapter port, LED power indicator, and a reset button. With the addition of the D-pad and NOAC board, the modded Super Joy gun is an all-in-one NES system sans cartridge port that can be used as both a light gun and a standard, albeit oddly shaped, controller.
Shortly after the post surfaced on the BenHeck.com forum, several prominent gamer-tech centric web outlets began spotlighting the mod. However, the focus seems a bit misplaced. While we love a good mod and commend GonzoMPM-1 for his efforts, the Super Joy light gun mod is hardly groundbreaking. Rather than building an entirely new unit from scratch, it seems that this mod merely reorganizes and reconstructs the components utilized by the original Super Joy system.
