Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings outlined his vision for the future of Netflix, and it seems that future might include a cable channel down the line.
Cable providers have long seen Netflix as a competitor to their services, but Hastings envisions a world where the two co-exist, and perhaps work together. As Hastings has stated in the past, he sees HBO as his true primary competitor. This is likely the reason Netflix is pouring a lot of time, effort and money into producing original content for their streaming service.
In the wake of Starz exciting Netflix's instant streaming service, Hastings needed the jolt of energy to inspire confidence in his stock holders, as well as the many subscribers to Netflix.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hastings described the move as "the natural direction," though he doesn't intend on his service to transition to cable providers immediately. Rather, he sees Netflix evolving into a cable channel more in the long term as streaming services and on-demand services naturally evolve. "The moment of truth," as Hastings outlines, would come when the viewer chooses between his on-demand service or another cable channel.
What exactly that means for Netflix Instant is unclear at this point. It would seem Hastings is looking for ways to better integrate his on-demand model, melding it with cable providers while likely leaving the door open for the traditional streaming service to grow. As always, we'll keep you posted on any updates as this story unfolds.
