Netflix is branching out, and it has announced the founding of an internal game studio that would spearhead its venture into the video game industry.
Amir Rahimi, the VP of Netflix's game studios, announced that the headquarters for this new branch was located in Helsinki, Finland – helmed by Marko Lastikka as the studio director. Rahimi went on to say that one of the guiding principles of Netflix's foray into the video game industry would be a lack of monetization, ads, and in-app purchases. The studio would build original games for the diverse audience that Netflix has cultivated over the years.
Best of luck though this is a very competitive and expensive space. To be honest, I think Netflix is better suited sticking to its television and movie content.
I can see Netflix have some success making games which are based on very popular Netflix shows which have many viewers. I think if the storylines and gameplay is fun, a lot of people may play Netflix games.
It would be nice if Netflix made higher quality ad-free web browser games which don't require installation, and can be played within Netflix's website, and they can charge an affordable monthly fee like $1 or more per month to play higher quality web browser games without ads.
