Sonic has fallen out of video game favor in the past few years; without the power of blast processing, many fans and critics feel games starring the blue hedgehog have become too gimmicky. Luckily, Sega seems to be taking note of what made Sonic great, and is taking the character back to his roots. The new project is only known so far under its code name, "Project Needlemouse." The teaser trailer (above) says that this is "an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up." GameSpot additionally reports that Sega brand manager Ken Balough has confirmed it will feature HD graphics, meaning it's almost certainly due for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Only a few months ago, Sega hinted that something like this may be coming. Sega of America vice president of marketing Sean Ratcliffe commented that the company is "always looking at [their] classic IP." He may have dropped a larger hint when he said "we can look at XBLA and so on, and it means we can give those core fans experiences in different ways now... rather than spending a huge amount of money trying to re-imagine IP on 360 and PS3; there's a lot more financial risk attached to that." This suggests, but doesn't confirm, that the new project could be a downloadable title. But whether that or a full retail release, this has shown the most promise recently of breaking the Sonic cycle.
