Xbox 360 avatars may become more life-like in the future, possibly with the release of Project Natal next year.
A new patent filed by Microsoft last week hints at a new Xbox 360 avatar system that will match the user's real-life, physical appearance.
"An avatar generator for a virtual environment reflects a physiological characteristic of the user, injecting a degree of reality into the capabilities or appearance," the patent reads. "Thereby, many of the incentives of the real world are replicated in a virtual environment."
Microsoft looks to use these new avatars as a way to get players off the couch, and perhaps be less annoying over Xbox LIVE.
"Linking the avatar to a physical characteristic of a user provides leverage to provide incentives or constraints that can encourage good behavior (e.g., healthy behaviors, virtuous behaviors, etc.)."
This new system would likely be introduced through Project Natal, Microsoft's upcoming camera, motion-sensing controller due out next fall. But as with all patent news, however, nothing can be deemed official just yet.
