I wonder if this means that the Apple TV settop box can play standalone games with a controller without the need for an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to stream the games like in the past.

I guest, the new Apple TV would be like Ouya, Nvidia Shield TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV which supports playing games with a wireless controller.

I think it is better for Apple that people buy an Apple TV instead of Roku, Chromecast, and Android TV. Apple makes a lot of money from the sales of digital content like apps, games, TV shows, movies, and music, so I bet, people with an Apple TV would spend a lot on apps, games, tv shows, movies, and games for their Apple TV.

Some Apple TV buyers may buy an iPad or iPhone after seeing a commercial for the iPhone/iPad on the Apple TV, or they got addicted to Apple products because of the great experience they have on the Apple TV like how many people bought iPhones because they owned an iPod.
