Square Enix has announced three new downloadable scenario expansions for Final Fantasy XI, its MMO based on its highly-popular RPG series. Masato Kato, who helped create the stories and scenarios for FFXI and its first expansion pack, Rise of Zilart, will continue to head up these next three expansions.
Available exclusively through the PlayOnline Viewer, all three expansions will appear across all available platforms worldwide. The first expansion, entitled "A Crystalline Prophecy – Ode of Life Bestowing" is slated for a spring 2009 release. The two remaining stories, "A Moogle Kupo d'Etat – Evil in Small Doses" and "A Shantotto Ascension – The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born" will launch in the subsequent months.
In an official statement, Square Enix provided brief background information for each of the expansions' back stories.
A Crystalline Prophecy - Ode of Life Bestowing: "One day, a giant crystal appeared in the skies above Jeuno, triggering a series of unexplained happenings across the land. Now, adventurers will set forth to unravel the mysteries of this primordial crystal that holds the secret of Vana'diel's past."
A Moogle Kupo d'Etat - Evil in Small Doses: "It all started with an innocent drop of rainwater and a rickety, ramshackle Mog House desperately in need of repairs. Little did anyone suspect that this was only the beginning of a harrowing nightmare unheard of in the annals of moogle-kind."
A Shantotto Ascension - The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born: "The eccentric Professor Shantotto returned to Windurst one day after a mysterious, unexplained absence, shocking her colleagues with behavior so outrageous it put her old self to shame! When she goes so far as to proclaim herself ruler of her own empire, adventurers set out to discover the truth behind her alarming shift in personality."
Pricing for each expansion was not revealed yet, but we'll update you as the word comes in.

Square Enix gathered Final Fantasy XI fans for a big fan event on the 22nd in Tokyo. The last Japanese FFXI offline event in 2007 saw the announcement of the Wings of the Goddess expansion pack. This time, while no expansion pack was announced, Square Enix did announce three expansion scenarios.
The three scenarios are titled, in Japanese, Ishi no Miru Yume, Senritsu! Mog Matsuri no Yoru, and Shantotto no Inbou. Each scenario tells a complete story, and all three were headed up by scenario writer Masato Kato. FFXI fans will recognize Kato from his work on the Rise of the Zilart expansion. More recently, he supervised the DS remake of Chrono Trigger.
While not lasting as long as a full expansion pack, Square Enix expects players to clear each scenario in one or two months.
Unlike past expansions, these three scenarios will be offered exclusively through direct download. Square Enix hasn't set pricing, but fans at the event were told to expect somewhere around the 1,000 yen ($10) range.
Ishi no Miru Yume will arrive first some time in Spring 2009. The other two will follow, separated by a few months.
These names, pricing, and release periods concern Japan only. We'll let you know about plans for international versions once Square Enix shares them.
