I was reading something today about how browser creators are trying to speed up web surfing, but it's more whats on the web and how well the servers do.

Point is, I came across the writer mentioning a new file extension WebP (.webp) that is suppose to be smaller and be faster and compete with GIF and JPG extensions by keeping the same quality.

I looked it up to see it was announced in 2010, anyone here use it?

I have cable internet, so Jpegs, Gif, PNG, and most other image files load fast. I see this image format being good for people who use dial-up which load images slowly.

It is available, but you need to install an add-on to make it available according to Wikipedia.

Telegraphics has released a free plug-in that enables WebP support in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and earlier.

http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ is probably simpler to use for compressing your image with no noticeable quality lost since you just upload your image file, and smush it compresses the file to save space, and you re-save it to your computer to upload to your website.

Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files. It is a "lossless" tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality. After Smush.it runs on a web page it reports how many bytes would be saved by optimizing the page's images and provides a downloadable zip file with the minimized image files.
