A few months ago, a French modder named kotomi set the internet ablaze with nostalgia and modding respect when he released pictures of his NES cartridge-console. The mod was rather rad, as there's just something otherworldly (or maybe just incestuous) in jamming a retro-console in one of the game cartridges originally designed to play upon it.

Today that concept has been taken yet another step forward, as modder darkeru of the benheck.com forums has released pics of his interpretation of the NES-modding theme. Not content with a simple system-in-a-cart, darkeru decided to cram not just an NES SOC (system-on-a-chip) in the cart, but controls, switches, and a 2.5-inch LCD as well.

The result is a battery-powered portable NES that'll make any retro gaming fan's heart go aflutter. There's no cartridge port, but the system inside the cart is one of the 99-in-1 NES clones that includes most of the classics. Darkeru notes that the project was actually just his first console mod, and required about a month of planning and work.
