sourceNintendo's latest 3DS handheld hardware revision, the New Nintendo 3DS, will be region locked, the company confirmed with IGN.
A Nintendo representative told us that “the situation will be exactly the same as for the current family of Nintendo 3DS systems.” The DSi, launched in the west in 2009, was Nintendo's first region-locked handheld and all 3DS consoles are region locked.
The New Nintendo 3DS was announced on August 29 during a Nintendo Direct. The latest hardware release comes in standard-sized and XL models and sports new features such as an analog control stick, faster computing power, two new buttons, Amiibo support and changeable cover plates.
The new handhelds will launch in Japan October 11, 2014, with no official U.S. date announced yet.
It's a bad move really.
