It's been rumored for awhile now that a new model was in the works, a very slim PS3 which is even more slimmer than the current slim PS3 model. Tonight at TGS they have confirmed it.

Sleeker and slimmer, the new PS3 comes in charcoal black color, but Japan gets a white color option as well. Sony says that the internal volume and weight of the new PS3 is less than half of the original system. It's 20 percent and 25 percent less volume/weight compared to the current PS3 Slim.

It remains to be seen how well something like this can run in the long run with heavy gamers.

Different regions will see different versions of the systems along with different prices with no mention of region lock.

North America:
  • 250GB - $269 (Uncharted 3/Dust 514 Bundle) - September 25th
  • 500GB - $299 - October 30th
Europe and PAL Territories
  • Flash Memory 12GB - 229 Euros - October 12th
  • 500GB - 299 Euros - September 28th
Japan
  • 250GB - 24,900 Yen - October 4th
  • 500GB - 29,800 Yen - October 4th

What I want to know is why? Why release a even more slim console? Whats the point? I don't know anyone who would take a PS3 on the go or mount it on the wall.


If I had to guess I say this is just to expand the PS3 life another 3-4 years.


Edit, Watched this unboxing and I actually like and found out that manual disc loading is back with this model which is a nice plus for me and yet that lid looks pretty cheap.

A lighter, and slimmer PS3 would be good for people who buy their PS3 online since the shipping and handling cost will be less, so online retailers like Amazon, etc can sell it for a few dollars less, and the buyer will save a little money on shipping since heavier and bigger items cost more to ship then smaller and lighter packages.

I agree, the price should be 250 for the PS3 slim since the Xbox 360 Slim 250GB cost 249.00 on Amazon .

I'm fine with consoles not coming with HDMI cables since HDMI cables only cost about 10 dollars or less at Walmart, and other stores which sell electronics, and I can pick the brand, and length of cable I want.

Plus, there are still many people who don't own a TV with HDMI ports, and still use component, VGA, and RCA/ Red, Yellow, and White cables on their older TVs and monitors.
 
DS, don't you already have an HDMI cable? lol And the price range should have been cheaper, but this version may have cost more to make than the Slim, because the Slim is plastic, and this one looks more metallic.
 
The regular one I had doesn't support 3D. You need a specific series that will support the 3D in full capabilities. It's new tech from what I assume.
