According to an unnamed source quoted by Eurogamer, Sony's upcoming handheld, codename NGP, is "a developer's dream" system, with some very, very intriguing features, including the possibility of games that are cross platform with the PlayStation 3. According to the source, "Sony is finally doing the things developers have been crying out for for years."

The details emerged during a presentation to U.K. developers, in which some of the hardware's features were revealed. Here's a bullet-pointed list of what you can expect when the device launches:

* Sony encouraged developers to create games that work across PS3 and NGP. "They want us to do cross-platform," said Eurogamer's source.
* Sony's idea is for devs to create games that are "not exactly the same game" on NGP and PS3 – there "has to be a reason for the NGP title...They want at least some kind of interactivity between the two versions with NGP-only extras," the source said.
* Sony listed the release date of the "Wi-Fi only" edition of NGP as 2011, while the Wi-Fi plus 3G version was listed as "Holiday Season 2011."
* Sony staff demoed a handful of upcoming first-party NGP titles, including Uncharted, Little Deviants and WipEout. The source said the latter was "the WipEout HD PS3 engine running on PS3 with no changes to the art platform. That means full resolution, full 60 frames per second. It looks exactly the same as it does on PS3 – all the shader effects are in there".
* NGP features three gyroscopes allowing for more accurate movement.
* The NGP front and rear touch panels are both capable of six-point multi-touch. Sony's example of the control system's use included the ability to "pinch" an object from both sides.
* "Social networking and location-based features" were highlighted for their gaming potential.

It's great to be able to report really positive news about Sony's hardware. The more I hear about the NGP, the more I can't wait to get one when it comes out. What about you guys? Are you psyched?
